“Sometimes you just have to give the people what they want.”
When it comes to design, this has been my mantra since beginning my professional career in graphic design at an advertising agency in the early 90's. I feel that visual communicators should do what they can to push themselves creatively and conceptually, but what every design job comes down to is what the client wants. Nothing will ever give a client peace if there's something about the design that they don't like.
A bigger logo, more red here, a brighter blue there, twisting text, or a starburst. The client could want anything. Naturally, I try my best to give the client something that will set them apart from what's out there, but it's what they feel the most comfortable with that wins in the end, and we both leave the collaboration happy.
To complete all these projects, I use design skills learned through professional and freelance experience as well as conceptual design skills learned in graduate school. I've had years of working experience in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, HTML, CSS, CMS, Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, and After Effects.
I'm also a wizard with an iPhone.
